Eston Humphrey Eagle Scout Project Paints Map of U.S. at Coupeville Elementary

Several years ago, a large map of the United States was painted on the asphalt play area at Coupeville Elementary School.  Over the years, the map faded and almost disappeared.

Eston Humphrey saw the need and took on the task of repainting the map as his Eagle Scout Service Project.  He raised the needed money and did the planning and organizing to get this project done.  Click here to see a slide show of the work and the final product!

Eston organized 14 youth and 4 adults to do the actual work, which was accomplished on a Saturday so it would be ready for school on Monday.  A great deal of planning was required on his part to make sure the work would go smoothly.  For instance, do you know how many different colors would be needed to make sure no state touches a state of the same color?

This time the paint used was Road Stripe paint, which should make for a very long lifespan on the playground.  Who knew Road Stripe came in more than white and yellow!

On Monday, dozens of elementary students were playing on the map, pointing out where they were from, identifying the different states, searching for a "green" state, and playing other games.  Elementary Principal Fran McCarthy inspected the map on Monday and is excited that it is renewed and available for a new generation of Coupeville Students.

The Foundation aided in this project by acting as a tax-deductible organization for holding the funds involved.  If you have a project that could be aided in this way, please contact us.
