It is a privilege to have an opportunity to share our journey since leaving the hallowed halls of C.H.S. in 1955 (Dave Engle) and 1956 (Dolores Harper).
After graduating from C.H.S., I attended Seattle Pacific College, received my degree in History and fulfilled the requirements to teach. Dolores moved to Eltopia, WA after graduation, attended the TriCities Business College, and later worked for the Bureau of Reclamation in Mesa, WA. We were married one week after I received my college degree in 1959.
That Fall, I began teaching school in Puyallup. Dolores worked for Grant's Chevrolet and also as a school secretary for the Puyallup Schools. Our two older daughters, Sylvia Engle Arnold and Shannon Engle Arnold (they later married brothers) were born in Puyallup. In 1967, we returned to Coupeville and lived in my great-grandparents, William and Flora Engle's home ( built in 1858). I was the Reading and Title I Coordinator for the Oak Harbor School District. In the summers, I was in charge of a Re
ading Day Camp for Seattle Pacific, where teachers were trained to teach the Slingerland Multi-sensory method for "Specific Language Disability" (dyslexic) children.
During this period, we were involved in the community in many ways. I served as president of the Island County Historical Society and also had the privilete of serving on the Coupeville School Board. Dolores was active in the Elementary School P.T.A. and worked for a time at Dean's Chevrolet.
In 1976, our third daughter, Stephanie Engle Penrod (CHS graduate in 1994), was born. This was the year the Lord called us into the ministry. We left that summer for Orange County, CA and lived in Anaheim for the next 16 years. I attended Fuller Theological Seminary, received a Master of Divinity degree and served at Plaza Bible Church in Orange, CA.
Our fourth daughter, Sarah Engle Viers (CHS graduate of 1996), joined our family in 1977. (Three of our four daughters became teachers!) We continued to serve in California until 1992, when the Lord brought us home to Coupeville to pastor the Coupeville (Living Hope) Foursquare Church. Today, I continue to serve as the Assoc. Pastor. During this time, I had the opportunity to do "tent making"--teaching for the Oak Harbor School Dist. I retired from teaching this past year (2007).
We are thrilled to be home here in the Coupeville community, a community that has given us so much. Truly, it does take a village and our hearts are filled with gratitude for all the Grace Shermans, Margaret Clarks, Minda Finleys, Leona Argents, Betsy Burleighs, John & LydaBeth Hopkins, Don Henrys, Eleanor Peischels, Eddie Dyffs--just to name a few who touched our lives and inspired us to be the best while in the Coupeville School System.
For all the Cub Scout and 4-H leaders, Sunday School teachers, families, and friends--Coupeville and its hallowed halls have sent forth many who have served in every part of th world. We join Alex Platt with those words so true, "I love the place I came from and I'm so proud of it!" We have been, and are being, blessed. We want to be a blessing to others!

Class Reunion 1962-63 |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The CHS classes of 1962 - 63 will be holding their class reunion August 9th and 10th. The festivities will begin with dinner on Saturday night at the Chief Petty Officers Club in Oak Harbor and then on Sunday a picnic at Admiral’s Cove. This is also the weekend of the Arts and Crafts Festival in Coupeville and the annual Lion’s Club Car show on Saturday in Oak Harbor so there will be plenty to do...and of course good food and conversation. Lots of folks have RSVP’ed that they are coming so mark these dates on your calendar and plan to have a great time. Contact Ron Roberts at: rdigbyr@msn.com if you have questions. Locally, Sandy Wells or Loann Gulick can also help you out with answers to questions about the reunion. See you in August! |
